Amazon.co.uk Review

When a teen magazine begins its hunt for a new cover girl, three friends, each very different in style and personality, become obsessed by the way they look. As Nadine starts to change her appearance, Magda becomes more infatuated by designer labels and their best friend Ellie, who feels plain in comparison to her two more glamorous colleagues, finds herself tumbling into the abyss of bulimia.

A sharp, well-observed and uncomfortable look at the teenage years, Girls Under Pressure successfully highlights the fears of a group of young girls on the cusp of adulthood. With her three main characters struggling to come to terms with who they are, Wilson still manages to maintain a sense of humour which somehow helps to make the horror of the story even more real. --Susan Harrison

1.0 out of 5 stars A real missed opportunity, 8 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Girls Under Pressure (Paperback)
I was very saddened by "Girls Under Pressure", having mormally been a fan of Jacqueline Wilson's books. Sadly, this one left me with a nasty taste in my mouth.

It was good to see her tackle something as important as eating disorders in a novel for children but either lack of research or lack of understanding has led to this book giving a dangerously misleading moral.

The girl who becomes anorexic in the story does so simply because she wants to be as thin as a model. Surely in this day and age, people now realise that eating disorders are not about food and weight but about low self esteem and poor body image. Ms Wilson really should have known better than to cash in on the misleading media image of anorexia as just a "slimmer's disease".

"Girls Under Pressure" only adds to the misrepresentation of a deadly illness and it left me feeling very sad indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic, 2 Aug 2006
This review is from: Girls Under Pressure (Paperback)
There is no other way you can describe this book. This book tells the story of the slightly overweight teenager Ellie. She feels outshadowed by her skinny and "boy magnet" friends Magda and Nadine. When a girl at the shopping mall tells Ellie that she is fat it is the last straw and she goes on a diet and ends up developing an eating disorder.

THis is a very real story about eating disorders one that anyone who has had friends with eating disorders can relate to very well. Although there are some very low moments in Ellies story you put the book down feeling very refreshed.

A must read for teenage girl with low self confidence - or anyone really

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for younger readers!, 9 Oct 2008

Be careful! My daughter is in year 5 and read this book. I know Jaqueline Wilson is to be congratulated for writing about difficult issues, but I do think this book and her other "Teenage" books should be more clearly described in the "blurb". This book contains descriptive passages of bulimic girls making themselves sick, of their sexual experiences with boys. It also contains some graphic imagery of food being likened to male parts. Great if you're 13+ and certainly up to Wilson's usual excellent standard of sparky characters, solid friendships and descriptive writing.

Well, what can I say? Yet another dramatic tale from Jaqueline Wilson's giant range of books and like the rest of them this one's just as addictive.
